depends on who you ask. according to "holy blood, holy grail", a book reporting scientifically valid research, the priory of sion is a secret society that has existed for almost two thousand years, protecting some kind of huge secret which gives them great power. the priory of sion has been called any number of other names, as it needed a "visible" front for its secret activities. however, if you ask, say, the history channel, they'll tell you there is no priory of sion on record until some 60 years ago, and that the one that is on record is not a secret society at all, the statutes are available to the public and so forth... personally, i am more inclined to believe in the academic research in "holy blood, holy grail", though it is contested and unconventional in some ways, since i read it, the methods and how they came to their conclusions.

They are a mysterious group of bitter dinner ladies who in The 15th Century got pissed off with kids for not eating their custard. One thing led to another at a staff meeting and the Priory of Sion was born. Waging war on children everywhere they hide under beds and in cupboards waiting to kidnap children and churn them in to fish cakes and possibly as a gravy to go with chips! They invented vile conspiracy theories about ghost and monsters to throw people of the trail allowing them to live in the shadows watching and waiting!

The real Priory of Sion is an association that was founded in 1956, in the French town of Annemasse, as the beginning of a massive hoax. There was a series of documentaries on cable TV awhile back all about this.
